Why Pure Water Cleans Windows Better Than Soap Ever Could

The science behind RO/DI reverse osmosis technology β€” and why streak-free, spot-free results start with water that has nothing in it.

The Real Reason Your Windows Look Hazy After Cleaning

You've probably noticed it: windows that looked clean when wet, but dried to a cloudy, streaky finish. It's not the cleaning technique. It's the water.

Tap water β€” whether municipal or well β€” contains dissolved minerals like calcium, magnesium, silica, and chlorine. These impurities are invisible when the water is wet. But the moment water evaporates, those minerals stay behind, bonded to the glass as white spots, haze, or a dull film.

In North Georgia, this problem is amplified. Hard water from wells and municipal supplies, combined with heavy pollen seasons and humidity, means residue builds up fast. Squeegees move the problem around. Soap adds its own residue. The only real solution is starting with water that has nothing to leave behind.

That's exactly what RO/DI purified water does.

πŸ’§ What Makes Water "Hard"?

Water hardness is measured in TDS β€” Total Dissolved Solids β€” in parts per million (PPM). The higher the TDS reading, the more minerals are dissolved in the water. Georgia tap water typically reads 80–250 PPM. At that concentration, every drop that dries on glass leaves mineral deposits behind.

How Our RO/DI Purification System Works

RO/DI stands for Reverse Osmosis / Deionization. It's a two-stage water purification process that removes virtually all dissolved solids before the water ever touches your glass.

1

Sediment Pre-Filter

Water first passes through a sediment filter that removes particles, dirt, and debris β€” protecting the membranes downstream.

2

Carbon Block Filter

Chlorine, chloramines, and organic compounds are removed. This also protects the RO membrane from chemical degradation.

3

Reverse Osmosis Membrane

Water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. Up to 97% of dissolved salts, minerals, and contaminants are removed at this stage.

4

Deionization (DI) Resin

Any remaining ions are captured by DI resin β€” positively and negatively charged beads that attract and hold the last traces of dissolved minerals. Output: 0–5 PPM pure water.

5

Pure Water on Glass

The purified water is fed through a water-fed pole to your windows. It agitates and lifts dirt, pollen, and grime β€” then rinses completely clean, leaving nothing behind when it dries.

πŸ”¬ Why Pure Water Is Also a Better Cleaner

Because pure water has had all its mineral content removed, it is "hungry" β€” it actively seeks to absorb and dissolve other substances. This makes it more effective at pulling dirt, pollen, and organic deposits off glass than tap water, which is already partially saturated with dissolved minerals. The result is a deeper clean, not just a cleaner rinse.

How Often Should You Have Your Windows Cleaned in Georgia?

Georgia's climate creates unique challenges for window cleanliness. Between pine pollen, humidity, and red clay dust, windows here can look dirty within weeks of being cleaned. Here's what we recommend:

🌸

Twice a Year (Most Homes)

Spring (post-pollen) and fall (before holidays) is the standard schedule for most homes in Madison, Greensboro, and Athens.

🌊

Quarterly (Lake Properties)

Lake Oconee and Eatonton homes deal with increased humidity, algae spores, and waterfront particulates. Quarterly cleaning keeps views crisp year-round.

🌲

More Often (Wooded Lots)

Heavily wooded properties in Morgan County and Watkinsville may see faster buildup from sap, pollen, and organic debris. Every 3–4 months is ideal.

🏒

Monthly (Commercial)

Storefronts, offices, and retail properties in the Athens or Madison area benefit from monthly window cleaning to maintain a professional appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RO/DI water and why is it used for window cleaning? β–Ό
RO/DI stands for Reverse Osmosis / Deionized water β€” water that has been stripped of all dissolved minerals, salts, and impurities. When pure water dries on glass, it leaves absolutely nothing behind. No spots, no streaks, no film. This is why it produces a flawless finish without squeegees or drying β€” and why it's considered the gold standard in professional exterior window cleaning.
Why does regular tap water leave spots on windows? β–Ό
Tap water contains dissolved minerals β€” mainly calcium, magnesium, and silica. When water evaporates off glass, those minerals stay behind as white spots or a hazy residue. In Georgia, where well water and hard municipal water are common, this effect is especially noticeable. No matter how carefully you clean with tap water, it will leave mineral deposits when it dries.
Is pure water window cleaning safe for seals, frames, and surrounding plants? β–Ό
Yes β€” it's one of the safest methods available. Because no chemicals or soaps are used, there's zero risk of degrading rubber seals, discoloring vinyl or painted frames, or harming your landscaping. The pure water rinses away completely and is safe for everything it contacts.
Do I need to remove my window screens before you arrive? β–Ό
Yes β€” screens need to be removed so we can clean the glass directly with the water-fed pole. Most screens simply lift or pull out from the inside. If you're unsure how to remove yours, let us know when you schedule and we can walk you through it. We can also remove them on-site for an additional fee if needed.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning? β–Ό
Not necessarily. As long as screens have been removed and we have access to an outdoor spigot, we can complete the job without you present. We send before and after photos when we're finished so you can see the results.
How often should I have my windows cleaned? β–Ό
For most homes in our service area, twice a year is the sweet spot β€” once in spring after pollen season and once in fall before the holidays. Homes near Lake Oconee, heavily wooded lots, or commercial properties benefit from more frequent service β€” every 3 months or monthly respectively.
What does window cleaning cost near Madison or Lake Oconee? β–Ό
Most residential jobs in our service area run between 50 and 50 depending on the number of windows, story height, and condition. All estimates are free and provided same day. Call or text us at 706-474-9112 and we'll get you a number quickly.
